Class Information:

This presentation for assisted living leadership and caregiving staff focuses on preventing constipation, identifying it early, and responding appropriately before escalation occurs. The purpose is to equip staff with practical, realistic, and evidence-informed bowel-care strategies that can be applied immediately in daily care. The presentation should cover risk factors, hydration, diet, mobility, medication effects, and early symptom recognition, signs of bowel impaction, followed by stepwise management using OTC options, prescription remedies (as ordered), and traditional home remedies such as warmed prune juice with milk of magnesia and butter. Hands-on comfort measures should include castor oil packs, gentle clockwise belly rubbing, and frequent side-to-side repositioning for bed-bound residents. Learning should be reinforced through interactive knowledge checks (true/false and multiple choice), scenario-based case studies, and opportunities for participant discussion.
